Distance Education has come up as an effective method to promote higher education in the world. India ranks 2nd largest in terms of providing distance education in the world after China. Himachal Pradesh University realized the importance of distance education in its early phased and get its name counted among very few Universities in India which adopted Distance Education in their early days. Himachal Pradesh University started offering distance education courses in 1971, just one year after its inception.

Conventional education system in India has always been the most preferred mode of education but the only we need distance education is because the formal mode has been accessible only to a few. To increase the reach of education to the people who are detained from accessing conventional education from any reason, we require distance education in India.
Himachal Pradesh University offer distance education through International Centre for Distance Education and Open Learning (ICDEOL). The ICDEOL was the first to impart instruction at postgraduate level in social-sciences, humanities, commerce and teacher training through the mode of distance education.

Himachal Pradesh University Distance Education Admission
Students seeking admission into courses offered by Himachal Pradesh University under distance education mode may fill out the admission form (DE-9 to DE-15) in their own hand writing. Students also required to provide all the documents required for the admission along with attested copies of their marksheet's photo copies. Migration Certificate shall not be a requirement for admission to any class/ course through ICDEOL. A candidate applying for admission under SC/ST/PH category must attach a copy of the requisite certificate issued by the competent authority authenticating the claim.
There is no entrance test for admission except M.Ed. Admission into .MB.A. PGDCA and APGDIT courses will be done through merit list.
