The university was established in the year of 1997 by the Government of Tamilnadu after a social reformer Thanthai Periyar. The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) & a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). The university offers various higher education distance education courses through the Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE). PRIDE has five hundred and twenty-five study centers throughout India and seven abroad. The duration of M.B.A & M.Sc (IT) course is 2 years, Duration of M.C.A programme is 3 years.

The fee for M.B.A first year is Rs.8715, for second year is Rs.8000. Fee for M.C.A first year is Rs.13715, for second & Third year is Rs.12000 respectively. For M.Sc I.T the fee for first year is Rs.13920, for second year it is Rs.13200.
